#ATCitupwithFriends is an ILLUSTRATION, Fantasy & Science Fiction focused Art Challenge – Trade Group hosted by Pabkins
A “master study” is a where you try to recreate a piece of art as closely as you possibly can to the original master’s work. It is a common assignment in art courses and used as a learning exercise. This is NOT you reinterpreting it in your own style. You are trying to mimic and recreate their work to learn how they used their mediums, their use of light and shadow and color etc.
This month is about learning from the “masters” – for our purposes a “master” is any artist past or present that inspires you but they must have been in a published work to qualify. For instance they illustrated several children’s books, comics/graphic novels, video games or did work for films, MTG, etc or in the case of deceased master artists they have works hanging in museums etc. An artist that only had their own independently published art books made (kickstarter etc). This rule is to avoid anyone doing a master study of an independent artist that is still working on establishing their art career. So please stick to historically famous artists or modern day widely published artists. The master study can NOT be fan art from any franchise. If unsure about the artists you want to select please just message and ask.
All of your cards must be a master study of a different artist. Do not do an entire set of one artist. Also the work must be an engaging work containing a character/living subject. This means no landscapes and still life’s. We WILL have Landscapes/Cityscapes as a completely separate theme later this year as I know many in the group enjoy land and cityscapes. Please remember while this is a great theme as a learning exercise please try to still choose your master study pieces as what you think you and other’s would enjoy receiving in their return envelopes.
If ever in doubt just shoot me an email to ask a question. Send signups and any questions to ATCitupwithfriends@gmail.com
These monthly themes are intended as a CHALLENGE as well as a way to trade fabulous original art and bond our little art community. Please rise to the challenge and treat your fellow artists with respect by putting in your best efforts. If you are unwilling to put forth true effort then please do not apply to join!
